HB 20-1356: Lost Or Stolen Firearms

• Firearm owners must report the loss or theft of a firearm to law enforcement within 48 hours of discovering it missing, provided they have reasonable cause to believe the firearm was lost or stolen

• First offense for failure to report is a Class 2 petty offense punishable by a $25 fine; second or subsequent offenses are Class 3 misdemeanors

• Licensed gun dealers are exempt from the 48-hour reporting requirement

• Law enforcement agencies must enter available descriptive information about reported lost or stolen firearms into the National Crime Information Center database

• Act takes effect 90 days after final adjournment of the general assembly (August 5, 2020), unless subject to a referendum petition requiring approval by voters in November 2020
