Individuals functioning as central service technicians in hospitals or ambulatory surgical centers must pass a nationally accredited exam and hold at least one of two credentials: Certified Registered Central Service Technician or Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician.

Hospitals and ambulatory surgical centers are prohibited from employing central service technicians who do not meet these requirements, except as noted in exemptions.

Individuals employed as CSTs for at least one cumulative year between December 31, 2015 and December 31, 2020, and continuously employed as of December 31, 2020 are exempt from the new credential requirements.

Individuals without required credentials may function as CSTs for up to 18 months while making good-faith efforts to obtain the credentials.

The act takes effect December 31, 2020, subject to referendum petition by voters within 90 days after final adjournment of the general assembly.
