• Prohibits health benefit plan carriers from applying a higher standard of clinical evidence for proton beam therapy coverage than they apply to other radiation therapy treatments for cancer.

• Does not require health benefit plans to provide proton beam therapy coverage, only that evidence standards be equal if coverage is offered.

• Defines proton beam therapy as a type of radiation therapy that destroys cancerous cells through the use of protons.

• Takes effect 12:01 a.m. on the day following the 90-day period after final adjournment of the general assembly, unless subject to a referendum petition requiring voter approval in November 2022.

• Applies to coverage decisions made on or after the effective date of the act.
