Pharmacists dispensing opioids must inform patients of potential dangers of high opioid doses according to CDC guidelines.

Pharmacists must offer to dispense FDA-approved opiate antagonists on at least an annual basis when the patient is concurrently prescribed benzodiazepines, sedative hypnotics, carisoprodol, tramadol, or gabapentin.

Pharmacists must offer opiate antagonists when opioid prescriptions are at or exceed 90 morphine milligram equivalents per CDC guidelines.

If a patient accepts the opiate antagonist offer, the pharmacist must counsel the patient on how to use it in an overdose event and notify them of available generic and brand-name options.

Exemptions apply to patients in hospice or palliative care and residents in veterans community living centers.
