HB 23-1271 Summary

• Establishes the first Friday of February each year as "Lunar New Year Day," an observed state holiday in Colorado.

• Permits appropriate observance of the holiday by the public and in all public schools throughout the state.

• Recognizes the cultural and historical significance of Lunar New Year, which is celebrated by over two billion people worldwide and has origins dating back to the 14th century B.C. in China.

• Aims to promote inclusion and visibility of the Asian American community, which is the fastest-growing population in the United States, and to counterbalance rising anti-Asian hate crimes and discrimination.

• Takes effect 90 days after the general assembly adjourns, unless a referendum petition is filed, in which case approval by voters at the November 2024 general election is required.
