SB23-162 Summary

• Expands pharmacy technician scope of practice to include performing point-of-care testing and patient care technical tasks as specifically trained and delegated by a supervising pharmacist.

• Allows pharmacy technicians to replenish automated dispensing devices without pharmacist verification if using bar code technology for accuracy checks or if a second pharmacy technician performs verification.

• Increases pharmacist supervision ratios for central fill pharmacies from six to eight persons (pharmacy interns or technicians), with no more than two interns allowed.

• Requires a majority of pharmacy technicians on duty to be fully certified by the board when three or more technicians are working, with any uncertified technicians holding provisional certification.

• Authorizes pharmacists and pharmacies enrolled in good standing with the federal Vaccines for Children Program to seek reimbursement through Colorado's medical assistance program for administering childhood vaccinations to children under 19 years old.
