HB 24-1171: Naturopathic Doctor Formulary

• Expands naturopathic doctor formulary to include all legend drugs (prescription medications) and Schedule III-V controlled substances for naturopathic doctors with federal Drug Enforcement Administration registration, excluding benzodiazepines, opioids, and opioid derivatives.

• Adds naturopathic doctors as authorized prescribers of controlled substances via electronic prescribing under state law.

• Requires naturopathic doctors to complete 10 hours of pharmacological continuing education by September 30, 2024 before prescribing formulary medicines, with requirement increasing to 12 hours annually for license renewals on or after June 1, 2025.

• Prohibits naturopathic doctors from prescribing medicines or devices to individuals under 18 years of age or ketamine to any age without advisory committee recommendation and director approval.

• Requires applicants for naturopathic doctor registration beginning September 1, 2024 to pass a pharmacology examination administered by the North American Board of Naturopathic Examiners.
