SB24-068: Medical Aid-in-Dying Summary

• Expands medical aid-in-dying eligibility to include Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) alongside physicians as attending and consulting providers.

• Reduces waiting period between oral requests from 15 days to 7 days; allows expedited process with single reiterated request if individual expected to die within 48 hours.

• Removes requirement that individual be "terminally ill resident" and instead requires individuals be "capable adults" with terminal illness diagnosis medically confirmed within 6 months.

• Prohibits life insurance companies and health insurance carriers from denying or altering benefits based on medical aid-in-dying availability; carriers cannot coerce individuals to request the medication.

• Takes effect 90 days after final adjournment unless referendum petition filed, in which case requires voter approval at November 2024 general election.
