Senate Bill 24-209 Summary

• Defines "inventory function" as nondispensing-related inventory management activities that nonlicensed personnel may perform under a licensed pharmacist's supervision.

• Authorizes pharmacy technicians to redispense prescription drugs and request refill authorization from prescribers, adding these activities to the definition of pharmacy technician practice.

• Allows pharmacy technicians and interns to replenish medication in automated cassette devices under pharmacist supervision, and permits redispensing of drugs returned to cassettes if medication integrity is maintained, bar code scanning is used, and expiration dates are current.

• Permits return of dispensed but undelivered prescription drugs to stock for redispensing if stored in the original container with an accurate label.

• Removes the "area of need" requirement for telepharmacy outlet registration and requires the pharmacy board to send quarterly newsletters detailing all relevant state law changes, not just pharmacy-specific laws.

• Effective July 1, 2024, for all prescription drugs dispensed on or after that date.
