Born September 19, 1927, in Ada, Oklahoma; served as a cryptographic technician in the U.S. Army's 62nd Air Services Group in Alaska during World War II and received an honorable discharge in August 1946.

Earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Denver, married Maxine Millikin in 1948, and had three sons: Martin Winston, Mark, and Noel.

Taught speech and drama at Western State College (now Western Colorado University) for 44 years starting at age 23, and earned both a master's degree and doctor of philosophy degree from the University of Denver.

Served two terms in the Colorado State Senate from 1975 to 1982, representing Senate District 33, and served as Minority Caucus Chair from 1981 to 1982; served on the Agriculture Committee for all eight years of his tenure.

Co-founded the Crested Butte Mountain Theater with Maxine in 1972 and spent his retirement engaged in theatrical productions, public speaking, golf, travel, politics, and community involvement.
