Local governments in Colorado must ensure building codes meet or exceed accessibility standards from one of the two most recent versions of the International Building Code when adopting, substantially amending, or updating their codes

Accessibility standards cannot provide less protection than required by the federal Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990

One- and two-family dwellings and townhomes complying with the International Residential Code are exempt from the new accessibility requirements

State agencies overseeing public schools, local district colleges, and health facilities must also ensure codes meet International Building Code accessibility standards when substantially amended

Effective date is January 1, 2026, unless a referendum petition is filed
