Journeyman electrician license requires 8,000 hours over at least 4 years of apprenticeship or practical experience, with 2,000 hours in commercial/industrial work and 288 hours of safety and code training within the last 8 years

NABCEP PV Installation Professionals can earn up to 2,000 hours of practical experience credit directly, plus up to 2,000 additional hours under supervision or up to 4,000 additional hours with documented solar industry work (at a 2:1 ratio)

Contractors performing photovoltaic installation work as of September 1, 2025 with at least one NABCEP-certified employee must register as a photovoltaic installer with the State Electrical Board by December 31, 2026

Only licensed electrical contractors or registered photovoltaic installers may perform photovoltaic electrical work for installations under 300 kilowatts capacity

PV installation training and military training may now count toward work experience credits for journeyman electrician and residential wireman licenses
