Federal firearms licensees may request a firearm serial number check from local law enforcement before purchasing a firearm from an individual, with requests going to the police department (incorporated areas) or sheriff's office (unincorporated areas)

Law enforcement must respond within 3 days with information on whether the firearm is reported stolen, lost, or involved in an open criminal investigation; agencies may charge a fee reflecting actual costs but must refund if they miss the deadline

All sheriff's offices and police departments must begin providing serial number checks no later than July 1, 2026

Licensed firearms dealers must report to law enforcement within 48 hours if they become aware that someone sold or attempted to sell a stolen, lost, or investigation-involved firearm; failure to report subjects dealers to existing state permit penalties

If federal systems become available allowing licensees to perform serial number checks directly, dealers may use that option instead of local law enforcement
