Owners of surplus military vehicles may register with the Department of Revenue and obtain license plates beginning January 1, 2028, allowing legal highway operation

Eligible vehicles must use wheels (not tracks), weigh under 16,000 pounds empty, have a gross vehicle weight rating of 20,000 pounds or less, and have no working mounted firearms

Owners must sign an affidavit limiting roadway use to no more than 1,500 miles per year, and registered vehicles may be titled as highway-use rather than off-highway vehicles

Surplus military vehicles owned by municipalities, counties, or fire protection districts for firefighting purposes, or operating as authorized emergency vehicles, are exempt from the mileage restriction

Qualified surplus military vehicles may be registered as collector's items under existing collector vehicle statutes
