Licensed physical therapists would be authorized to perform preparticipation physical examinations and provide written clearance for students to participate in high school team athletic activities in Colorado.

Statewide high school activities associations that require physical examinations before athletic participation must permit physical therapists licensed under Article 285 of Title 12 to conduct these exams.

Currently, the Colorado High School Activities Association permits clearance only from physicians, physician assistants, advanced practice registered nurses, nurse practitioners, and chiropractors.

Physical therapists complete graduate-level education and clinical training in evaluating musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, cardiovascular, and pulmonary systems.

Effective date is August 12, 2026, assuming the legislative session adjourns on May 13, 2026, unless a referendum petition is filed.
