"Safe route to school" is established as a new legal definition, meaning roadways frequented by pedestrians and bicyclists traveling to or from a nearby school that local governments designate to increase safety

Automated vehicle identification systems may now be used to detect moving traffic violations in school zones and along safe routes to school

Existing requirements for placing automated vehicle identification systems along safe routes to school are reduced for state, county, city and county, or municipal governments

Effective date is August 12, 2026 (90 days after legislative adjournment), subject to potential referendum
