Williams served as Eagle County Commissioner from 1976-1984 (two terms) and in the Colorado House of Representatives from 1984-1992 (four terms) representing House District 56

During his legislative career, he chaired the House Transportation and Energy Committee, House Agriculture, Livestock, and Natural Resources Committee, and several interim committees focused on water and transportation issues

Williams operated a cattle and sheep ranch in Edwards, Colorado, and later worked as a government relations consultant from 1993-2019, representing agricultural and energy clients
