Department of Motor Vehicles administers a program providing 50% refunds of sales tax on school buses equipped with 3-point lap/shoulder seat safety belts purchased between July 1, 2011 and December 31, 2017

Local or regional school districts submit applications with agreements from private carriers to provide 1-50 school buses equipped with seat belts; carriers request reimbursement of 50% of sales tax paid

School districts must provide written notice to parents and legal guardians about seat belt availability and proper use, and instruct students on proper fastening and unfastening of seat belts

No liability exists for school districts, carriers, or bus operators for damages from injury resulting solely from a student's use, misuse, or failure to use the installed seat safety belts

Increased operator's license and motor vehicle registration restoration fees from $125 to $175, with $50 of each fee deposited into a nonlapsing school bus seat belt account to fund the program
