Municipalities may vote to appoint 1-5 assessors instead of electing them, effective October 1, 2010.

Municipalities establishing appointed assessors may set their qualifications, compensation, and hire clerical staff; multiple assessors must designate a chairman.

Appointed assessors must be sworn by the town clerk before taking office.

Removes requirement that assessors be elected; allows assessors to be either elected or appointed at municipal discretion.

Repeals the previous statute requiring three elected assessors in each town.
