Telephone companies and voice over Internet protocol service providers must forward the telephone number and street address of 9-1-1 callers to public safety answering points equipped for enhanced 9-1-1 service, effective October 1, 2011.

Subscriber information may be used only for responding to emergency calls, investigating false or misleading emergency reports, or enabling emergency notification systems.

Subscriber information collected for emergency notification systems may only be used in case of an emergency (changed from "life-threatening emergencies").

Subscriber information provided for 9-1-1 service and emergency notification systems is confidential and exempt from disclosure under the Freedom of Information Act.

Voice over Internet protocol service providers comply with this requirement if they meet federal standards under 47 CFR 9, provided state requirements are not inconsistent with federal law.
