HB 6514 Summary

• Creates a Committee for Legislative Staff Internships consisting of 6 representatives appointed by the Speaker of the House and 6 senators appointed by the President Pro Tempore, with balanced party representation and no more than half from each party.

• Establishes two cochairpersons (one senator and one representative from different political parties) appointed by their respective house leadership rather than elected by committee members.

• Changes intern appointment terms from nine to twelve months to the duration of the spring semester, with possible extension through the regular legislative session and any special sessions.

• Removes the requirement for the committee to appoint a secretary from legislative agencies and clarifies the committee shall recruit, select, and assign interns directly to members of the General Assembly.

• Requires the committee to submit reports on program operations to both houses of the General Assembly prior to the last day of each regular session.
