• Employers with 10 or more employees must grant eligible employees 8 hours of parental leave per school year (starting July 1, 2014) to attend qualified school-related activities.

• Eligible employees include parents, guardians, or grandparents with custody of children in K-12 or child day care facilities.

• Qualified school-related activities include parent-teacher conferences, school governance meetings, planning and placement team meetings, and school visits for child's well-being, but exclude extracurricular events and field trips.

• Employees must use existing vacation, personal leave, compensatory time, or unpaid leave for parental leave; employers may require minimum 2-hour increments per activity and may limit spousal leave to 8 hours combined if both spouses work for the same employer.

• Labor Department enforces compliance; employees may file complaints with the Labor Commissioner for violations and seek remedies including back wages, reinstatement, and restoration of benefits.
