Amends Section 53a-59 to add a new sixth subsection making it assault in the first degree when a person intentionally causes serious physical injury to a family or household member as defined in Section 46b-38a.

Classifies this new domestic violence assault as a Class B felony with a mandatory minimum sentence of five years imprisonment that cannot be suspended or reduced by the court.

Updates gender-neutral language throughout the statute by replacing "he" with "he or she" and "his" with "such person's" in all assault in the first degree provisions.

Effective date is October 1, 2013.
