SB 1124 - Secure Storage of Firearms Summary

• Expands firearm storage requirements to apply when a minor, an ineligible resident, or a resident posing imminent injury risk may access a firearm, not just minors under age 16.

• Requires firearms to be stored in a securely locked box or container, or kept on the person's body or within close proximity for immediate retrieval.

• Establishes strict liability for damages when a person violates storage requirements and a minor or ineligible resident obtains the firearm causing injury or death.

• Creates the criminal offense of "criminally negligent storage of a firearm" as a Class D felony when storage violations result in injury or death, with an exception for unlawful entries to premises.

• Takes effect October 1, 2013.
