Chief executive officers of towns, cities, and boroughs shall appoint zoning enforcement officers in consultation with zoning commissions, replacing the previous system where commissions provided their own enforcement method.

Building officials shall be appointed by chief executive officers without specified term limits; removes the previous four-year term requirement and provisions for acting building officials during vacancies.

Chief executive officers shall appoint local fire marshals and deputy fire marshals in consultation with boards of fire commissioners or equivalent authorities; removes language requiring marshals to serve until removed for cause.

Fire marshals may appoint certified deputy fire marshals as acting fire marshals for up to 180 days when the marshal becomes unavailable due to death, disability, dismissal, retirement, or loss of certification.

All changes take effect October 1, 2014.
