Increases penalties for malicious and intentional animal cruelty by amending section 53-247(b) of the general statutes, effective October 1, 2015.

First offense: imprisonment not to exceed seven years or fine not to exceed $5,000, or both (previously class D felony).

Subsequent offenses: classified as class C felony (enhanced from prior classification).

Exempts licensed veterinarians, approved slaughter methods, medical research personnel, agricultural practices, and lawful wildlife taking from these penalties.

Referred to Environment and Judiciary committees; received joint favorable recommendations.
