HB 5429 Summary

• Commissioner of Consumer Protection shall develop and implement a voluntary program for collection and disposal of unwanted pharmaceuticals at licensed pharmacies, effective October 1, 2016.

• Program shall allow anonymous drop-off of unwanted medications at participating pharmacies and require transport of collected pharmaceuticals to biomedical waste treatment facilities for incineration.

• Pharmacies are not required to participate in the program.

• Commissioner of Consumer Protection shall organize a public awareness campaign to educate the public about dangers of unsafe pharmaceutical disposal and availability of the collection program.

• Commissioner may adopt regulations as needed to implement the program provisions.
