Each school bus of model year 2021 or newer must be equipped with three-point lap and shoulder seat safety belts for every seating position, effective October 1, 2016.

The commissioner may suspend the registration of any school bus not equipped with the required three-point lap and shoulder seat safety belts until installation is completed.

All operators and passengers on a school bus equipped with seat safety belts must wear them while the bus is in operation, effective January 1, 2018.

School districts must provide written notice to parents and legal guardians about seat safety belt availability and proper use, and must instruct students on how to properly use, fasten, and unfasten the belts.

School districts, transportation carriers, and school bus operators are not liable for damages resulting solely from a student's use, misuse, or failure to use the installed seat safety belts.
