Allows municipalities to adopt ordinances requiring automatic fire extinguishing systems in new residential buildings of one or two families, approved by the local fire marshal.

Municipalities must specify procedures in their ordinances for notifying the local fire marshal when fire extinguishing systems undergo repairs or are disconnected from water sources.

Exempts municipal ordinances adopted under this provision from the civil penalty provisions that apply to other violations of fire extinguishing system requirements.

Renumbers existing statutory subsections regarding fire extinguishing systems in other building types (hotels, nursing homes, educational facilities) to accommodate the new municipal ordinance authority.

Effective date is October 1, 2016.
