School buses that are model year 2022 or newer must be equipped with three-point lap and shoulder seat safety belts for each seating position, effective October 1, 2017.

Operators and passengers of school buses equipped with three-point lap and shoulder seat safety belts must wear such belts while the bus is being operated.

The commissioner may suspend registration of any school bus not equipped with the required three-point lap and shoulder seat safety belts until they are installed.

Local and regional school districts must provide written notice to parents or guardians about the availability and proper use of seat safety belts, and must instruct students on proper use, fastening, and unfastening.

School districts, transportation carriers, and bus operators are not liable for damages from injury resulting solely from a student's use, misuse, or failure to use the installed seat safety belt.
