Coaches of intramural and interscholastic athletics must immediately remove any student athlete displaying warning signs of sudden cardiac arrest, including fainting, difficulty breathing, chest pain, dizziness, and abnormal heart rate.

A qualified school employee must notify the student's parent or legal guardian within one hour of removal (with reasonable effort to notify immediately).

Student athletes cannot return to any supervised team activities involving physical exertion (practices, games, competitions) until receiving written clearance from a licensed health care professional trained in cardiac health evaluation.

Licensed health care professionals for clearance purposes include physicians, physician assistants, and advanced practice registered nurses.

The State Board of Education may revoke a coaching permit for violations of these requirements, effective July 1, 2018.
