Each local and regional board of education must develop and implement a policy for alternative educational opportunities for expelled students, effective July 1, 2018.

Required policies must include a whole student approach, curriculum aligned with State Board of Education guidelines, high expectations, and research-based practices.

Boards must submit their alternative education policies annually to the Department of Education.

Pupils under 16 years old who are expelled must be offered an alternative educational opportunity, either through alternative education with an individualized learning plan or according to the board's policy developed under this act.

Repeals section 10-233o and replaces standards previously adopted by the State Board of Education with locally developed board policies for alternative educational opportunities.
