Modifies the periodic examination schedule for defendants charged with serious crimes who are found incompetent to stand trial, effective October 1, 2018

Applies to defendants charged with crimes resulting in death or serious physical injury, or specific violent offenses including sexual assault and weapons crimes

Requires courts to order periodic competency examinations at intervals of not less than six months for defendants released or placed in custody of mental health or developmental services commissioners

Changes examination intervals to not less than eighteen months if a court finds, based on an examiner's recommendation, that the defendant will never regain competency even with treatment

Periodic examinations continue until the defendant attains competency or the prosecution time limit expires, whichever occurs first
