Chief Medical Examiner must determine whether a death was sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) when an autopsy is required for a sudden/unexpected death not caused by recognizable disease or a death under suspicious circumstances, and the deceased had epilepsy.

Chief Medical Examiner shall note the SUDEP determination on the death certificate and issue a copy to the North American SUDEP Registry as soon as practicable after autopsy completion.

Sudden unexpected death in epilepsy is defined as death of a person with epilepsy not caused by injury, drowning, or other known causes unrelated to epilepsy.
