Group health insurance policies providing prescription drug coverage must include coverage for medication-assisted treatment for opioid use disorder, effective January 1, 2021.

Coverage must include medically necessary behavioral therapy and counseling combined with FDA-approved prescription drugs prescribed by physicians, physician assistants, or advanced practice registered nurses.

Opioid use disorder is defined as a medical condition characterized by a problematic pattern of opioid use and misuse leading to clinically significant impairment or distress.

The requirement applies to policies of the types specified in subdivisions (1), (2), (4), (11) and (12) of section 38a-469 of the general statutes that are delivered, issued, renewed, amended, or continued in Connecticut on or after January 1, 2021.
