Municipalities may enact or enforce ordinances placing additional obligations or restrictions on pet shops beyond state requirements, pursuant to section 7-148

Pet shops must have dogs and cats examined by a licensed veterinarian before sale and every 15 days thereafter until sold, with records maintained for each animal

Consumers are entitled to reimbursement for veterinary costs (up to purchase price or $500) if a dog or cat becomes ill within 20 days or is diagnosed with a congenital defect within 6 months of sale

Pet shops must post a statement of customer rights in a visible location and provide a copy to purchasers; failure to comply results in a $250 fine

Violations of veterinary examination or consumer reimbursement requirements carry fines up to $500, effective July 1, 2021
