Peace officers must notify next of kin of a deceased person as soon as practicable, but no later than 24 hours after identification, following applicable law enforcement agency guidelines.

If notification cannot be made, officers must document the reason for failure or delay and any attempts made to notify next of kin.

Next of kin may request the Office of the Inspector General investigate failures or delays in death notification.

The Inspector General must investigate failures to report deaths and may recommend to the Police Officer Standards and Training Council that an officer's certification be suspended, censured, or revoked if the failure was intentional or made with reckless indifference.

Failure to report or timely report a death becomes grounds for police officer certification cancellation or revocation under the Police Officer Standards and Training Council's authority.
