Clinical social workers licensed under chapter 383b and advanced practice registered nurses licensed under chapter 378 employed by UConn's Student Health and Wellness may issue emergency certificates to transport students to hospitals for psychiatric evaluations.

The certificate may be issued when the healthcare provider has reasonable cause to believe a student has a psychiatric disability and is a danger to themselves or others, or is gravely disabled and in need of immediate care.

A licensed physician must examine the student within 24 hours of arrival at the hospital.

Hospitals may not hold the student longer than 72 hours unless the student is committed to a hospital for psychiatric disabilities pursuant to Connecticut law.

The act becomes effective July 1, 2022.
