Commissioner of Correction shall establish a compensation schedule for inmate work that recognizes merit, diligence, and skill to encourage inmate incentive and industry.

Pay range for standard positions is $5-$10 per week; positions requiring specialized skills or training pay $35 or more per week.

Earned compensation is deposited in a bank account or State Treasurer account and paid to inmates upon release via debit card.

During incarceration, compensation may be disbursed in the following priority order: federal taxes, court-ordered restitution, civil judgments for crime victims, victim compensation, state taxes, dependent support, work-related travel expenses, incarceration costs, and court-ordered fines.

Accrued interest credits to institutional inmate welfare funds, and compensation is in addition to any other compensation under section 18-50; effective October 1, 2023.
