Full-service restaurants may not provide single-use plastic straws or stirrers to consumers unless requested, effective January 1, 2024.

Restaurants may provide single-use plastic straws or stirrers to any person with a disability without requiring a request.

Restaurant owners and operators must train current employees within 90 days of the effective date and new hires within 30 days of hire on these requirements.

Single-use plastic straws and stirrers include disposable tubes made from petroleum or biologically based polymers, but exclude straws made from paper, pasta, sugar cane, wood, metal, or bamboo.

Municipalities may adopt ordinances that further restrict plastic straw distribution, but cannot prohibit providing them to persons with disabilities.
