School bus drivers may use mobile electronic devices with screens between 9-13 inches for GPS or navigation if securely attached to the dashboard and cannot be removed or used for calls or texting while the bus is in operation, effective July 1, 2023.

Commissioner of Motor Vehicles shall waive the engine compartment component of the commercial driver's license test for school bus driver applicants from July 1, 2023 through November 27, 2024, and applicants receiving this waiver may only operate school buses within the state for student transportation.

School bus operators must pass a proficiency examination including a road test in either a Type I bus (over 10,000 pounds) or Type II bus (10,000 pounds or less), with operators tested in Type II buses ineligible to operate Type I buses.

Commissioner of Motor Vehicles shall study and submit recommendations by February 1, 2024 regarding school bus driver shortage responses, including extending commercial driver's license validity from four to five years and streamlining licensing processes.

School buses and student transportation vehicles may display decals, posters or stickers advertising school bus driver employment opportunities on their sides and rear, effective July 1, 2023.
