Each local or regional board of education shall appoint one or more school nurses or nurse practitioners qualified under regulations adopted by the State Board of Education in consultation with the Department of Public Health.

School nurses may act as visiting nurses in the town, visit homes of pupils in public schools, assist school medical advisors, and perform other duties required by the board.

Parents or guardians are permitted to administer medications to their own children on school grounds regardless of other state statutes or regulations.

School nurses and nurse practitioners provided to nonpublic schools under section 10-217a must submit to criminal history records checks.

By July 1, 2024, the State Board of Education shall adopt regulations requiring each school nurse to complete at least 15 hours of approved professional development every two years and create a special services endorsement for school nurses.
