A "Q" endorsement on a driver's license indicates eligibility to operate fire apparatus and requires training per Commission on Fire Prevention and Control standards or qualifying military training and experience.

Applicants must demonstrate operation skills through testing in a representative vehicle to the commissioner, Connecticut Fire Academy, regional fire school, or local fire official, except as provided for military personnel.

Veterans who apply within two years of military discharge and active armed forces or National Guard members are waived from the skills demonstration requirement if they meet federal standards in 49 CFR 383.77(a)(2) or 49 CFR 383.77(b)(2).

The commissioner shall prescribe the application form and process for military personnel and veterans seeking the skills demonstration waiver.

The act becomes effective October 1, 2024.
