Failed or replaced conventional septic systems in environmentally sensitive areas must be replaced with nitrogen-reducing systems

Department of Public Health must establish nitrogen-discharge limits and DEEP must designate environmentally sensitive areas (including coastal zones, watershed protection areas, and locations near drinking water sources) by March 1, 2026

Property owners must conduct annual inspections of nitrogen-reducing systems, and local health departments must maintain databases and conduct compliance checks
