Local and regional boards of education must adopt policies limiting smart device use in schools beginning with the 2025-2026 school year, following Department of Education guidance

"Smart device" is defined as cellular mobile telephones or other wearable/portable technology that can connect to the Internet, collect and transmit data, and communicate with other devices

Students may not possess or use remotely activated paging devices in public schools without written permission from the principal, granted only when a reasonable basis is established

Boards of education retain discretionary authority to restrict student possession or use of cellular phones, considering the special needs of parents and students

Effective date: July 1, 2025
