Licensed hospitals must administer buprenorphine to emergency department patients presenting with opioid use disorder symptoms, without requiring hospital admission, when medically indicated and with patient consent, starting January 1, 2027

Hospitals must provide patients with a supply of opioid antagonists (such as naloxone) upon discharge from the emergency department

Hospitals must refer treated patients to one or more local substance use disorder treatment programs operated or approved by the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services

Effective date of October 1, 2026 for the statutory provisions
