House Bill 137 Summary

• Requires all statewide and other candidates appearing on the general election ballot to file a sworn disclosure statement between August 1st and September 1st of the election year certifying their tax filing and payment status.

• Candidates must attest they have filed all due State and Federal personal income tax returns (or have pending extensions), paid all determined State and Federal personal income taxes, and paid all assessed real property taxes due by May 30th of the election year.

• Special election candidates must file the same disclosure statement within 7 days of filing to be a candidate, with property tax verification based on the last assessed tax year.

• Candidates who fail to file the required statement face a $50 daily fine up to a maximum of $3,000.

• The Commissioner of Elections must post all filed statements on the office's internet site by September 8th for general elections and at least 10 days before special elections, including the names of candidates who failed to file.
