Cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer) affects approximately 2,000 to 3,000 Americans annually, with an average diagnosis age of 72, though about one-third of patients are under 65

The cancer has three types based on location: intrahepatic (in the liver), perihilar (where ducts leave the liver), and distal (near the small intestine)

No cure currently exists, and the 5-year survival rate ranges from only 2% to 30%, largely because the disease is difficult to detect early due to the bile ducts' deep location in the body
