During his eleven months in office, Milk sponsored the nation's first legislation banning discrimination based on sexual orientation in public accommodations, housing, and employment

Milk was assassinated on November 27, 1978, along with San Francisco Mayor George Moscone, by fellow elected official Dan White

President Barack Obama posthumously awarded Milk the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009, and he was inducted into the California Hall of Fame that same year
