Limited access facilities adjacent to canals or water bodies in areas with high canal volumes or narrow roadways must install guardrails, retention cables, or other barriers between the highway and water body.

Department of Transportation must establish standards for installation and maintenance of barriers designed to prevent out-of-control vehicles from entering canals or water bodies, with criteria potentially including water depth, width, or proximity to the roadway.

Existing limited access facilities must have barriers installed by December 31, 2013.

Effective date is July 1, 2010.
